European Dravet Syndrome Conference 2025 Día 1: Un Día Intenso de Aprendizaje y Compartir

Hoy jueves, 3 de abril, marcó el emocionante inicio de nuestra conferencia científica anual, la European Dravet Syndrome Conference 2025, en el Colegio Oficial de Enfermería de Madrid.

Un arranque inspirador

José Ángel Aibar, presidente de la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet, nos dio la bienvenida a todos, acompañado por el Dr. Lieven Lagae, miembro de nuestro comité científico. Ambos destacaron la importancia de conferencias como esta, donde profesionales sanitarios, investigadores, empresas farmacéuticas y representantes de pacientes se unen para poner en común sus ideas y discutir sobre posibles direcciones y colaboraciones futuras, con el fin común de mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes.

Explorando el síndrome de Dravet desde todos los ángulos

En la primera sesión, tuvimos el honor de contar con la presencia de la Dra. Ingrid Scheffer, neuróloga pediátrica y epileptóloga de la Universidad de Melbourne, en Australia. Durante esta sesión, la Dra. Scheffer nos ilustró sobre las presentaciones clínicas del síndrome de Dravet, abordando temas como el tipo y la frecuencia de crisis epilépticas, la posibilidad de regresión del neurodesarrollo debido a las crisis, y los descubrimientos neurológicos sobre comorbilidades como los trastornos motores. También habló sobre las mutaciones mosaico, que afectan al 7,5% de los pacientes, y la relación entre el síndrome de Dravet y la vacunación, que puede desencadenar las primeras crisis epilépticas en la infancia debido a la fiebre pero que no debería interrumpir el calendario habitual de vacunación.

La segunda sesión, moderada por el Dr. Stéphane Auvin, se centró en los avances en el diagnóstico del síndrome de Dravet. El Dr. Franck Kalume presentó los principales biomarcadores, tanto actuales como futuros candidatos, destacando la importancia de encontrar uno para evaluar correctamente los efectos de posibles tratamientos y distinguir el síndrome de Dravet de otras enfermedades similares. La Dra. Quratulain Zulfiqar Ali habló sobre las últimas técnicas y herramientas de diagnóstico de epilepsias genéticas, subrayando la relevancia del ADN no codificante y mitocondrial, así como la secuenciación de ARN, proteómica y metabolómica. Además, mencionó nuevas técnicas de diagnóstico como el mapeo óptico genómico. El Dr. Stéphane Auvin profundizó en cómo comunicar el diagnóstico del síndrome de Dravet, anticipándose a las preguntas de las familias para minimizar su ansiedad y abordando temas como la muerte súbita inesperada en epilepsia (SUDEP) con empatía y claridad. Nuestro presidente, José Ángel Aibar, destacó la importancia de las organizaciones de pacientes como la nuestra para apoyar a las familias, promoviendo la colaboración entre familiares, médicos e investigadores.

Del café a los pósteres: un espacio para conectar

En nuestra conferencia, la pausa para el café no es solo un descanso, sino que es además una oportunidad para que los asistentes presenten sus pósteres científicos. Este momento permite además compartir ideas, resolver dudas y tejer redes de colaboración entre todos los profesionales e investigadores presentes.

El síndrome de Dravet en la edad adulta

La sesión posterior, moderada por la Dra. Danielle Andrade, se centró en las manifestaciones del síndrome de Dravet en adultos. La Dra. Gaia Colasante presentó novedades sobre los modelos animales adultos, estudiando el rol de diversas células en la patogénesis del síndrome y la posible compensación de otros canales iónicos. La Dra. Danielle Andrade discutió la evolución de la enfermedad en pacientes adultos, señalando que aunque las crisis epilépticas disminuyen con la edad, la discapacidad intelectual, los problemas de comunicación y la movilidad empeoran. También abordó la prevalencia de episodios psicóticos en adultos con síndrome de Dravet y la posibilidad de que la enfermedad evolucione de un trastorno del neurodesarrollo a uno neurodegenerativo, lo cual necesita más investigación. El Dr. Víctor Soto Insuga ofreció perspectivas sobre la transición de la atención sanitaria de adolescentes a adultos, y Amanda Stansfield, madre de una paciente adulta, compartió una emotiva charla sobre el impacto de la enfermedad a largo plazo en la unidad familiar.

Después de cada sesión, se reservó tiempo para preguntas, generando discusiones sobre cómo apoyar a las familias afectadas y el efecto a largo plazo de los fármacos anticrisis en los pacientes.

Hacia el futuro: tratamientos y tecnologías innovadoras

Tras una pausa para comer, nos sumergimos en dos sesiones sobre el futuro del tratamiento del síndrome de Dravet. La primera sesión, presentada por la Dra. Simona Giorgi, exploró nuevos fármacos en desarrollo. El Dr. Andreas Brunklaus habló sobre los avances en los ensayos clínicos de terapias avanzadas para el síndrome de Dravet, y el Dr. Lieven Lagae discutió la posible redefinición del algoritmo de tratamiento del síndrome de Dravet. En la segunda sesión, el Dr. Vicente Villanueva destacó el uso de tecnologías emergentes, como la inteligencia artificial y el machine learning, para detectar y predecir crisis epilépticas.

Por otro lado, la Dra. Hong Wang compartió sus estudios sobre el desarrollo de un nuevo modelo animal de rata con síndrome de Dravet. Durante esta sesión, también escuchamos al Dr. Ángel Aledo Serrano, quien presentó su investigación con nuestra Fundación sobre el impacto de las olas de calor en los pacientes y sus familias. Finalmente, el Dr. Cameron S. Metcalf nos habló sobre la plataforma de cribado de fármacos antiepilépticos (Epilepsy Therapy Screening Program, ETSP) del National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) en Estados Unidos. Junto con su equipo, se dedica a cribar fármacos antiepilépticos utilizando, entre otros, un modelo animal desarrollado por la Fundación Síndrome de Dravet, lo que permite evaluar el efecto de cualquier fármaco que entre en este programa de cribado en dicho modelo.

Investigación y participación: cerrando el día con fuerza

En la última sesión del día, escuchamos a la doctoranda Anabel Granja Domínguez hablar sobre la implicación de los pacientes en el desarrollo de guías prácticas para las enfermedades raras. Luego, el Dr. Ryan Arnold, de Stoke Therapeutics, compartió su investigación sobre una modificación de la escala Vineland-3 para detectar cambios sutiles debidos al tratamiento en pacientes con síndrome de Dravet.

A continuación, tuvimos tres charlas enfocadas en la investigación básica. Primero, el Dr. Fabrizio Capitano habló sobre el inicio del fenotipo epiléptico y cognitivo en ratones con síndrome de Dravet. La Dra. Clara Zourray explicó cómo los déficits prenatales en pacientes alteran el desarrollo cortical, basándose en datos de su modelo de organoides derivado de pacientes. La jornada concluyó con una charla de la doctoranda Ellie Chilcott, quien presentó datos sobre la edición de ARN mediante la inhibición de ARN largos no codificantes para rescatar el fenotipo epiléptico y de SUDEP en modelos animales de ratones con Dravet.

Un día intenso de aprendizaje

La jornada de hoy sido un día intenso, lleno de charlas realmente interesantes y rodeados de asistentes internacionales proveniente de los cinco continentes. Gracias a ello, hemos aprendido mucho sobre diferentes aspectos del diagnóstico, tratamiento y manejo del síndrome de Dravet. Mañana viernes, 4 de abril, tendremos nuestro segundo día de conferencia y no tenemos ninguna duda de que será tan interesante como hoy.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

The Dravet Syndrome Conference 2023 is organised by Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, whose registered office is located at Calle Doctor Fleming, 30, 28036 Madrid, Spain.

The conference shall take place at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid, at Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, 93, 28007 Madrid, Spain, on Thursday 23rd of March 2023. Attendance to this conference is free of charge, but mandatory for organisational reasons.

Participants must register online at www.dravetconference.com. Upon registration, each participant will receive an electronic confirmation by email. On-site registration will not be be possible. If a participant has not received the official email registration confirmation within 3 days, they must contact the conference secretariat at research@dravetfoundation.eu.

The conference registration includes: Attendance to all sessions, oral and visual presentations, all coffee and lunch breaks, and conference documentation with all information about the event. The registration does not include travel and accommodation costs or any other personal expenses.

Admittance to the conference without registration cannot be granted.

Conference Attendance
Upon arrival at the Official College of Nursing of Madrid the day of the event, all participants have to check-in at the onsite Conference Registration Desk. The desk will open on 23rd of March at 8:30 a.m. Upon registration onsite, the conference team will provide participants with information about the event and a badge, which should be worn visibly at all times. The personalised badge authorises participants to attend all conference sessions, and lunch and coffee breaks.

Cancellation Policy
Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain reserves the right to cancel any registration forthwith and without liability on its part in the event of any damage to, or destruction of the venue by fire, shortage of labour, strikes, industrial unrest, public health measures, or any other cause beyond the control of the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain, which shall prevent it from performing its obligations. In these circumstances, every effort will be made to find an alternative format/venue or propose a new date for the conference. Should the conference be cancelled for any reason, airfares, hotels, or other costs incurred by the participants are not reimbursed by the Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain.

Any participant is allowed to cancel his/her registration but must notify this to the conference organisers by e-mail at research@dravetfoundation.eu within a minimum of 10 days prior the event. Failure to attend the event without prior written notification by email may incur a no-show fee, which shall cover individual organizational, material and catering costs.

Name Change
All registrations are only valid for the respective person mentioned in the form. A registered participant unable to attend the conference may nominate (free of charge) a substitute participant by notifying the conference organisers by email at research@dravetfoundation.eu before 16th of March 2023. The procedure allows giving the last name, first name, and email address of the new participant.

Personal Data
Upon registration, the participant authorises Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain to use their personal data stated above to inform the participant of any further conferences, events, or information concerning the conference and Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain’s activities. The conference booklet online will only contain authors, titles, and affiliations of submitted abstracts, but no full abstract texts. The conference printed booklet will contain full abstract texts from all participants. Conference certificates will be sent to the participants as a PDF document upon request at research@dravetfoundation.eu. Only the name & affiliation will be stated in the certificate, not the email addresses of the participants.

Information is collected by an automated computer system that manages registrations. Security and confidentiality are guaranteed by state-of-the-art technical tools. However, Dravet Syndrome Foundation Spain declines any responsibility concerning data security transmitted through the internet.

Photography
The conference is held in public; therefore, we do not ban participants, exhibitors, partners and other companies from taking photographs of conference activities and participants, and share it via social media. By participating in the conference, you approve that general pictures will be taken and used for our Social Media output, our websites and other communication purposes. You hereby waive any right to oppose, and expressly authorise the organiser to make them available on the Internet or as it may seem fit. Author’s presentation slides shall not be photographed by any conference participant. 

Disclaimer
